Varying the pattern of your sentences is a surefire way to give your writing extra flair. Problem is, most people just aren’t sure about what changes to actually make. If you’ve stumped about how to vary those sentences, here are some tips:

Reverse the order. If your sentences always have the subject coming before the verb, then reverse the order. Same if you normally write the other way around.

Start with a description. Instead of writing “The product stood out from the pack,” add a descriptive phrase in front. Example: “Throw in a table in the corner of the room, the product stood out from the pack.”

Insert an idea in the middle of a sentence. Instead of writing “They named the killer whale Kamala,” insert a though that adds information in the middle. Example: “They named the killer whale, which has victimized its share of local residents, Kamala.”

Use seldom-employed punctuations. Semicolons, colons, double-dashes and parentheses can be used to create less-than-usual sentence varieties. Take advantage of them.

Alternate long and short sentences. Varying the lengths of sentences within the same paragraph is one of the quickest ways to get this result. It also forces you to condense and expand ideas, which further adds to the variety in style during reading.

An issue that seems to come up again and again (at least, among students and novice writers) is how many sentences a paragraph is supposed to have. Some say there should be at least three; some say five is enough; others seem to think you can go on however long provided you stick to a single topic.

The truth is, there’s no hard and fast rule for this. A valid paragraph, after all, can be anywhere from a single sentence to a single block of sentences occupying three pages.

When you work for a publication, for instance, they’ll likely have their own guidelines about how long your paragraphs should be. These guidelines could be widely different from those prescribed by another publication and neither of them will be wrong.

If you’re not given any rules about what to do, you can follow these general guidelines instead:

Write longer paragraphs if you want to focus the reader’s attention on a topic, making it useful for important items that require elaborate discussion (hence, the long paragraphs in reference books). By long, we mean a minimum of five sentences on each paragraph (usually more).

Write shorter paragraphs to hasten the pace. This is why you see newspapers use a lot of single-sentence paragraphs. If you’re not comfortable going that short, you can limit yourself to three sentences per paragraph.

For web content, stick to four sentences or less. It keeps the writing scanning-friendly and easy on the eyes. Additionally, shorter paragraphs mean you can look away more, saving your eyes from the strain of staring at a backlit screen.

When you know what makes up a good sentence, you can make sure the sentences you write are done correctly. Below, we list some characteristics we believe all good sentences have in their favor. Making sure your sentences fall along the same lines can only generate positive results for your writing efforts.

It begins with the main point. Starting out with the main point puts your main noun and verb up front. This ensures that the reader quickly figures out what’s going on, all while minimizing the likelihood that they’ll misunderstand what the sentence is communicating.

It ends with the second most important idea. The beginning and ending are the most memorable parts of the sentence, so your most important ideas should appear in those two places.

It’s grammatically sound. Nobody appreciates poor grammar and bad writing mechanics. It’s just not a pretty sight, apart from being cumbersome to read. Use an English writing software if you need help on this area.

It should be easy to read expressively. Your sentences should sound good when read aloud, as that’s how it will come across to your readers.

It’s easy to understand. A reader shouldn’t have to pause and call time out to wrap their heads around what you’re saying.

It stays within a reasonable length. Sentences are considering long, but acceptable, at around 30 words. Try to avoid going beyond that length at any point.

Writing good sentences is a key skill if you want to turn up solid essays on other longer pieces of writing. Work on your sentence-creation skills and you’ll lay a strong foundation for mastering the rest of the craft.

Here are some tips for fashioning well-written sentences:

Use active verbs as a default. Unless there’s a specific reason for writing in the passive form, then write active sentences. The actor-centric form of active sentences give it a dynamic feel that makes your communication easier to understand.

Use passive verbs only when you want the focus to be on the object of the action. This will happen when the object of the action carries more relevance in the succeeding discussion than the person carrying it out. Other than that, passive sentences will also tend to confuse and obfuscate meaning.

Use “to be” verbs mindfully. That means, you use them because they’re the best way to express the idea. Avoid using them by default.

Minimize the distance between a subject and its verb. The fewer words that exist between a subject and its verb, the easier it will be to get the relationship between them. Too much fodder in the middle can make the reader lose sight of your point.

Make sure your subject-verb agreement is sound.

Start with old information and end with the new. Doing so helps ease the reader into the new details since they can associate them with something more familiar.

When revising at the sentence level, your goal should go beyond making your sentences correct (all you need is a decent writing check software for that). Instead, you should aim to catch every part where your writing stumbles or gets lost, doing what it takes to bring it to life.

Here are practical activities you can do to properly revise sentences:

Replace long verb phrases with more specific verbs. Not only do they make your work more concise, they’re also easier to understand.

Look for words repeated within successive sentences and try to replace it with an equally accurate synonym in the second sentence. If that’s not possible, try to combine the two sentences into one.

Check your word choice, making sure you find the best ones that convey your exact meaning. Never settle for a word that “may” communicate it correctly, taking into the account context of usage.

Catch sentences that begin with a preposition and see if there’s a way to write them in a more vibrant manner.

Remove as many prepositional sentences as you can. The only thing that should stop you is if cutting one out destroys a sentence’s meaning. Otherwise, snip it – it adds no particular value.

Watch how your sentences vary. Too many long sentences can ruin the flow, just as too much simple constructions can make the work sound elementary.

While some people treat sentences as a singular aspect of speech, they are really made up of numerous parts. Each of those individual components can mean an entirely different thing when taken out of the context of the entire statement. As such, care should be taken to ensure that it communicates exactly what you’re trying to say.

Dependent Constructions. When writing a sentence, always consider the meaning of each of the phrases and clauses that form it. That way, you can determine each of the dependencies, so that you may structure the sentence to properly reinforce them.

Punctuations. It can’t be stressed enough how important proper punctuation is to well-written sentences. In truth, a single comma, colon or dash can change an entire statement’s meaning, so be very careful when editing your materials for punctuation.

Non-essential remarks. Some statements in the sentence might fit in well, but aren’t necessary to make the point (i.e. they’re parenthetical remarks). In these situations, it’s usually fine to leave those in. If the sentence reads even just a little bit ambiguous, though, target them as the first items to be taken out.

Most writing software won’t be able to help you on this end, especially if the text already follows standard grammar and syntax. For the most part, it’s all about how well you can objectively judge your own writing, so that you may be able to competently revise them for better clarity.

The careers of most people have been made or broken just when they were starting out by how they wrote their resumes. Resumes tell a potential employer a lot about you. Using writing software can help you present your resume in a good format and clear language. A resume devoid of mistakes such as punctuation errors, grammar mistakes, long sentences, spelling mistakes can help you move forward in your career. Apart from the English software helping you to identify these mistakes, it will give suggestions of how you can rectify them as well. You can use writing software to come up with a good cover letter that will ultimately make a potential employer consider you.

If you want to move forward in your career, you should be able to communicate effectively with colleagues and clients.
