If you want to become a writer, you need to be adept at becoming an expert on any topic assigned to you. We use the word “expert” liberally here, of course — we don’t mean someone who can match the skills of a guy who has a doctorate and spent a decade in the field. Instead, it pertains to writing with sufficient general knowledge and up-to-date information regarding the topic.

How do you get that kind of knowledge within a short time? Here are some avenues:

Subscribe to professional blogs. Put your news reader to good use and subscribe to professional-looking blogs that focus on the field. We put emphasis on professional, since crap blogs with little useful information litter the web — those will just clog up your feeds. You don’t have to read all the articles, either. Seeing the headlines alone can clue you in. If you find something interesting (or needed in what you’re writing), you can dive in.

Study the way the articles are written. Look for articles that appear to be aimed at the kind of audience you’re writing for. Those are the ones you want to learn from and emulate.

Read introductory books. There are plenty of condensed, 101-type books out there for almost any field. Pick up one for the subject you’re brushing up on and read it.

Don’t stop at reading. Passively taking in information can only go so far. You need to apply what you learn in some form, lest have it go away in a few days. Write mini-articles or features, even non-commissioned ones — they will help your retention immensely.

If you’re like most blokes who spend the day staring at a computer, you’re likely logged on to Facebook the entire time. So why not put that social resource to use when it comes to researching your articles and features? Here’s how.

Get ideas from people’s conversations. Look at what people are discussing, posting, exchanging and leaving on their friends’ walls. Chances are, some of them could be timely and newsworthy things that you can totally turn into a decent piece.

Find sources for interview. Put out the word on Facebook that you’re looking for expert sources for a topic and there’s a good chance someone will contact you, either volunteering or recommending someone on their network. Yep, things just got a whole lot simpler.

Stay on the pulse of the people and groups you cover. If you want to stay in-the-know, then get on the friends list of all the people and groups you cover. Their updates (and those of their friends) can provide endless amount of material.

Test your articles. If your editors will allow it, you can use Facebook to test the stuff you write. Find friends online, send them the article and get their feedback — all in real time. It’s a quick and simple way to arrange for read-through.

Want to finish the research part of your writing assignments faster? Here are some ideas to get the “turbo” going for that step:

Come up with a plan for the kind of information you will be looking for. Write down an actual plan for the kind of details you want. If you don’t know what you’re looking for, you’ll end up losing time wading through stuff you don’t need.

Limit yourself within three to five sources. Find three to five good sources of information and stick with them. While there’s probably useful data elsewhere, trying to cover every possible source won’t help you make your deadline. Keeping a tight group of sources, however, will.

Use an organizing software like OneNote to keep all your notes in one place. Keep all your notes in one place. We recommend a notebook software like OneNote or Evernote, although there are other software types that can help you towards this end. Doing so simplifies managing the data immensely.

Group your research according to categories. It’s going to be hard to write a paper based on disorganized notes. The most straightforward way to arrange research is to group them according to categories. Doing so allows you to compartmentalize the information, so you can check on a category only when you need to.

Add all necessary information to each note you write down (author, publication date and more). Make sure all necessary bibliographic and similar information are included with your notes. The last thing you want is to have to borrow a book again because you forgot to put down the author’s complete name.

If you do any sort of writing in this day and age, there’s a good chance you use the internet for research. While much has been said about the web’s lack of credibility as a source of accurate information, it remains the most easily accessible research resource at everyone’s disposal. As such, we all know we’re going to use it at one time or another.

Start with Wikipedia, but don’t end there. Wikipedia has everything, which makes it a great place to start any research. Unfortunately, the lack of an authoritative voice also makes it a place ripe with misinformation. It’s fine to start with Wikipedia to get your gears going, but make sure to get the hard facts you will put in your papers elsewhere.

Find a way to verify any information you get with an authority source. If you’re going to use Wikipedia, make sure to verify all details you get from there with their original source. That way, you can cite something that actually carries some authority.

Use reliable resources. Online editions of newspapers, journals and magazines are generally accepted as valid sources. Just make sure to take the next step below to give your information more juice.

Check author credentials. If you’re planning to use any web source as your actual material, make sure to check the author’s credentials — their educational credits, publishing status (i.e. are they published in any trade journals) and reputation in the field.

Use Facebook and Twitter. Social network addicts know this all too well: Facebook and Twitter are excellent places to get pointed in the right direction during research. Just drop a question (e.g. Where can I find information on *obscure subject you’re writing a paper about*) and wait for the suggestions to roll in.
